2018 NFL Mock Draft: New York Jets 3-round mock
By Sean Dyer
At sixth overall, the New York Jets use their 2018 first-round pick to find their franchise quarterback.
Baker Mayfield is a polarizing player. You either love him or hate him and even some fans who loved him at Oklahoma don’t want him on their NFL team.
He’s drawn comparisons to Johnny Manziel due to his on and off-field antics. However, Mayfield is not letting those comparisons bother or define him.
I personally can’t get enough of Baker Mayfield. I’ll admit that I’m not sure the New York market is best for him. The media will be all over his every move regardless of where he plays but the microscope will be zoomed in that much more in the Big Apple. However, this kid can ball.
Mayfield is a natural leader. He can certainly take things too far, but he’s a fiery, competitive guy. And I’m not defending his actions against Kansas, but he was provoked pregame. He also used Kansas’s diss as motivation and lit them up with his on-field play.
WalterFootball.com thinks there is a lot to like about Mayfield at the next level:
"[Mayfield] is a gritty gunslinger quarterback who has an “it” factor to his game. Mayfield doesn’t have a strong arm, but it is good enough to make the throws required in the NFL. One of Mayfield’s most impressive strengths as a passer is being able to locate the ball well and throw receivers open. He is very good with his timing and trajectory on passes to hit receivers on the run and set them up for lots of yards after the catch. Mayfield is very skilled to loft in touch passes downfield and throws a very catchable ball. He can be an accurate passer with superb ball placement."
Mayfield can also extend plays with his feet and take off when needed. His decision-making is also a plus after he threw just six interceptions in 2017 and 30 over his 48-game career.
One of my favorite things about Mayfield is that he went from walk-on at Texas Tech to walk-on at Oklahoma to Heisman Trophy winner. Say what you want about him but he thrives when adversity strikes.
When the New York Jets are on the clock at No. 6, Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold are both expected to be off the board. If the Jets are lucky, they will be the only quarterbacks taken and they’ll have their choice between Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield.
Allen may be taller and was never on SportsCenter for grabbing his crotch, but my money is on Mayfield being the better NFL quarterback.
By drafting Baker Mayfield, the New York Jets find their elusive franchise quarterback who will make Robby Anderson, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and the entire Gang Green offense better.
