A silver lining of another Patriots Super Bowl is that an old friend of the New York Jets finally gets his shot at a ring.

Super Bowl 52 is just under two weeks away. Ho hum. Another year, another iteration of the New York Jets sitting around and watching their arch rivals play for the trophy. This is the story that doesn’t seem to change for us Jets fans, does it? The names change, at least some of them, but the story doesn’t. We are talking about next year and the Patriots don’t ever go away.

Most of the country, OK the majority of the country, will be rooting for the Eagles. Even though the Eagles fan base is a group that is tough to root for, that is what we all will be doing. Who could really stand seeing Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and all the rest of them win another one? It’s time for a change at the top of the league. Enough of the Patriots.

But there is one silver lining for Jets fans. If the Patriots do win the big game, there will be something we can take from it. It’s similar to what we could have taken if the Saints had won it all. For anyone who didn’t notice, the great Mike Westhoff joined the staff of the Saints. We all wanted him to get a ring for all of the work he has done over the years.

For the Patriots, there is an old friend that finally gets his shot to win a ring. For years he was our leading tackler, but never got his chance to win the big one. Now he does. David “Hitman” Harris finally gets to cash in on his hard work over the years. He finally gets the shot to win the ultimate prize.

If anyone ever deserved a shot, it’s Harris. He was as big of a workhorse as we have had in recent memory. With no Pro Bowl selections it is more than fair to call him underrated. In ten years in Green and White, Harris averaged nearly 109 tackles per season. After being selected in the second round of the 2007 draft, Harris started nine games in his rookie season and never looked back. He never relinquished his inside linebacker position until he left the Jets prior to the 2017 season.

In New England, Harris’ playing time grew in the second half of the season, but he did play well, posting 1.5 sacks in a 23-3 win over the Bills late in the season. When needed, the Hitman could still bring the hit, man. See what I did there?

Now I am not saying that we should root for the Patriots. Our green jerseys would be taken away if we EVER did that. That feels odd to even say. But, if the Patriots do win, there is a silver lining. When a former member of the family gets their chance to win, even if they are on the evil side now, it’s a nice story for us. We all loved David Harris, part of me is rooting for him when the game starts.
