Round 5, Pick 152: Chris Thompson, Running Back, Florida State

Original Pick: Cooper Taylor, Defensive Back, Richmond

After an impressive showing in the East-West Shrine Game, scouts were high on the underrated Cooper Taylor, comparing him to Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor due to his size. With praise like that, it was only naturally that Reese decided to take a chance on the Richmond product. Unfortunately, Taylor became nothing close to a player of Chancellor’s caliber. Taylor only saw 16 games in his three years in New York and was waived in the middle of the 2015 season.

The Giants lacked some serious depth at running back going into the draft and definitely could have used a pass-catching back to complement David Wilson. An unheralded runner out of Florida State, Chris Thompson would have been the perfect player to take at this point in the draft. Granted, Thompson hasn’t developed into anything truly special in his time with the Washington Redskins, but he’s proved to be dangerous weapon on third down thanks to his great hands out of the backfield and shiftiness in open space.
