There are no guarantees of success if the New York Giants hire Matt Patricia as the head coach.

The New York Giants are in the midst of a full coaching search for the first time in a few years. Tom Coughlin was the long-term coach and Ben McAdoo found his way in right off of the coaching staff. We all saw how it ended with McAdoo and it’s time for a new direction. The search is on and that is when the rumors start flying.

Recent reports indicate that Matt Patricia, Patriots defensive coordinator, may be the frontrunner for the job, as we reported earlier today. We know who is boss has been for the past several years. Bill Belichick’s head coaching record is the stuff of legends. There is no need to go through the history, we will all just get jealous because he hasn’t been coaching for any of our teams. Not fair is it?

According to the Daily News, the signs are pointing towards the signing of Patricia in New York. Great news, right fans? Someone intimately familiar with The Patriot Way may be the Giants next coach. There is talent on his side of the football in New York. He is sure to turn things around. Isn’t he?

Not so fast. Coming from New England brings with it no guarantees. It’s not as if the Bill Belichick coaching tree has produced a Murderer’s Row of top NFL coaches. Here are the assistants that have gotten jobs after working with Belichick (NFL jobs only):

  • Romeo Crennel
  • Al Groh
  • Eric Mangini
  • Josh McDaniels
  • Nick Saban
  • Jim Schwartz
  • Bill O’Brien

Next: Don't give up on Perkins yet

Now, let’s see the list again, this time with their respective records as an NFL coach:

  • Romeo Crennel: 28-55
  • Al Groh: 9-7
  • Eric Mangini: 33-47
  • Josh McDaniels: 11-14
  • Nick Saban: 15-17
  • Jim Schwartz: 29-51
  • Bill O’Brien: 31-33

That leaves the Belichick coaching tree with a current record of 156-227. The grass is not always greener once they leave. Once in a while they return, like Josh McDaniels. They all have learned that it has been hard to win without their leader.

Matt Patricia could be different. Giants fans, just don’t put the cart before the horse. There are no guarantees here.
