No Draft Cost

Everyone knows Mike Maccagnan’s theory of building a team by now. Build through the draft and supplement through free agency. He wants to create that sustained success that teams like New England have achieved. In this upcoming draft, the Jets have three picks in the top 50. I think we could all agree that is a good start. They also have eight picks in the draft overall. Works for me, how about you?

However, they don’t pick in the top five. Their earliest pick is number six, a familiar spot for Maccagnan and the Jets. If the team is very serious about one of the top quarterbacks in the draft, namely Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen, they are likely going to have to trade up to get them. Chicago made a similar move to get Mitchell Trubisky last season. That means they will have to give up some of their draft resources.

You know how many draft resources the Jets have to give up to get Cousins? None, that’s how many. If they sign Cousins, they will still have eight draft picks coming up. They can use those resources to fill other holes around their new quarterback. They can, and I know this isn’t normal for the Jets, put their quarterback in a position to succeed. They can give Kirk the weapons he needs to take his game to that next level.
