The New York Mets avoided arbitration with a relief pitcher that will never pitch again.

It’s not easy being a New York Mets fan. I don’t think any fan of the team would disagree with that statement. There certainly hasn’t been a lot of winning associated with Mets fandom. Being a fan of the Mets has meant watching lots of underperforming players, some who were far better when they weren’t Mets, like Roberto Alomar. It hasn’t been an easy job but someone has to do it, right?

There are also the off the field items that make us all scratch our heads. The biggest one is Bobby Bonilla day. It’s amazing how one guy can get paid this much for doing absolutely nothing. Well, you have heard of the Patriots Way, this is the Mets Way. Our wonderful owner also doesn’t think the Yankees can sustain their business model. Sigh.

Now in one sense, the latest news is good in that they are looking at the bullpen. This piece of news, if we didn’t know the name, would be a good thing for the Mets. But it still isn’t. It’s very Mets, this move. No preface needed, just read it:

More from Empire Writes Back

That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. The Mets have avoided arbitration with a player that has been banned from the league for life. Isn’t it nice to see the team come together for a player at a position they need? Oh yes, they CAN’T USE THIS GUY! So, WHO REALLY CARES?

The real thing to talk about is how Mets of a story this is. Do we hear other teams talking about players that have been banned avoiding arbitration? If we are on the subject, how many other teams pay guys that have been out of the organization for many years? Probably none for as long as Bonilla has been off of the team. But we CERTAINLY don’t hear stories about guys that have avoided arbitration that are never going to see the money.

It’s like reverse Jerry Maguire. DON’T SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!

Mejia was once a good prospect. He was the closer of the future until the suspensions started rolling in. But now, Jenrry Mejia is an afterthought. Hey, at least he isn’t going to arbitration. Only with the Mets.
