The New York Mets are reportedly interested in Todd Frazier, which would be interesting.

The New York Mets are trying to rebuild roster around a young pitching staff. That wouldn’t be much of a statement, except for the fact that they have to do so on a budget. It makes it an interesting job. Sandy Alderson has to look in the bargain bin for free agents that other teams may pass on. It’s difficult but you have to be on the lookout for players that aren’t getting a lot of attention, so the price is right.

Reports are indicating that the Mets have expanded their searches and one player that may be coming into focus is Todd Frazier, most recently of the Yankees. He is a player we haven’t heard a lot from this offseason. Typically, that takes a player’s contract down a few pegs, potentially putting Frazier on the Mets radar. Would he be a good choice?

Frazier would certainly be an interesting choice. He doesn’t hit for a high average, his career currently sitting at .245. His power numbers aren’t bad, with a per year average of 30 home runs and 86 RBI. He’s not much of a threat in the playoffs, hitting .189 over five different series on two separate teams. He has one home run and six RBI in the playoffs for his career.

So what is so interesting? One is a player defecting from one New York team to the other. It just doesn’t happen. It certainly is allowed when a player is traded, they should go to the team they are told, but sometimes it doesn’t come out that way. If a player is just signing with one of the teams, it’s coincidence. A lot of those players don’t like the Mets anyways.

The Mets do need someone to play the position. Despite how they talk about him, David Wright is not coming back any time soon. Signing a third baseman is one of the two essential signings, one that will make the Mets better.

According to Spotrac, Frazier made $12 million last season. There is no way that “big spender” Wilpon will spend that much. But without a lot of interest, his price tag should go down. If and when it does, the Mets should take a look. It certainly would be interesting.
