Despite the report, Bill Belichick will not be the New York Giants coach in 2018.

Our younger readers may not remember that Bill Belichick, many moons ago, was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. In fact, his defensive game plan from Super Bowl XXV resides at the Football Hall of Fame. He was once a beloved man in this town, until he bolted New York for New England.

What if he could come back? If you believe the latest news reports, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility. You have all heard the reports about trouble in New England. Tom Brady forced the Jimmy Garoppolo trade. Brady, Belichick and Robert Kraft have a rift between them. Supposedly the era is coming to an end. It could even be Belichick’s last year with the Patriots.

According to the NY Daily News, a “source” has indicated that Belichick would like to coach the Giants (via SNY):

"“I’m sure Bill knows this is his last chance to be the Giants coach,” the source said. “Bill sees an opening — an opening to get to the Giants.”The source continued by saying Belichick definitely wants to be New York’s coach, and believes him and new GM Dave Gettleman would make a great pair.“He wants to be the Giants coach. I know that for a fact,” the source said. “That would be pretty cool. My guess is if he wants out, the Giants already know. He would be great with Gettleman. Bill is a football guy. Gettleman is a football guy.”"

Now I know this is an exciting idea for Giants fans. Come on, who wouldn’t want a coach that has that many Super Bowl victories under his belt? The Giants would be getting the crown jewel of coaching.

The trouble is it is way less likely than these articles seem to make it look. Never say never, but realistically, someone reading this article has a better chance of being hired as the Giants coach than Bill Belichick.

First of all, Belichick is 65 years old. He would be coming to a team where the star quarterback is on the back-end of his career and they don’t have a definite young player to take over. They also have no offensive line.

I’m just not so sure he wants to leave a team set up to go deep in the playoffs every year to coach a team where he nearly has to start over. Even if it is the Giants.

Take the source into account as well. SNY is sourcing the Daily News for the information. The Daily News often uses some sources that are third sources and/or fourth sources. To be short, they aren’t always the most accurate. We don’t know how the source knows Belichick, or is in any way capable of stating what he thinks. It could very well be nothing.

Don’t get too excited. Bill Belichick probably isn’t even leaving. Why should he?
