New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman gave cornerback Eli Apple a clean slate. Or did he?

When the New York Giants selected Eli Apple number 10 overall in 2016, they were expecting big things. It comes with the territory when you are a top ten draft pick. You are expected to come in and make an impact in year one and a bigger one in year two. One interception and 15 passes defended over two years doesn’t qualify as anything other than disappointing. It’s certainly not good for a top ten selection.

It also came out in 2017 that Apple as a problem in the locker room with this teammates. Landon Collins called him a cancer. It got to the point where he was suspended for the season finale for conduct detrimental to the team. This behavior is unbecoming of any player but especially of a top ten selection. Under the old regime it was nearly a forgone conclusion that Apple would be gone.

But the regime has changed. Dave Gettleman is now the general manager. How does he feel about the Eli Apple situation? Here is what he had to say to Steve Serby of the NY Post after meeting with Apple (via NFL.com):

"“It went fine,” Gettleman told Steve Serby of the New York Post regarding the meeting. “He was very attentive. He was focused. I told him he’s got a clean slate for me. Let’s move forward. Let’s see what happens.”"

It sounds like Gettleman is ready to move onward and upward. On its face, it makes sense. He wasn’t here for the problems of the past. A new leader should come into a situation with fresh eyes. He or she shouldn’t be influenced by the situations from the past, they shouldn’t be prejudiced by them.

A clean slate is one thing, however, it’s not really a commitment to much. It doesn’t mean that he will be on the 2018 roster. “Let’s see what happens”. That can be translated to that he will be moved if the right situation comes along. If he is that bad with his teammates, that is the right attitude to take as well.
