Despite some statements, New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan is keeping strategy close to the vest, which is a good thing.

Time for prepping the offseason in the world of the New York Jets. It’s another year of watching the tournament go on without the Jets. We know there is no playoff mandate for next year from ownership, but a good offseason could take this team to the next step which is a return to the playoffs. It starts with shaping the roster and looking over the current players.

For most of us it starts at the quarterback position. It’s no secret that it has to get better. During his end of the year press conference, the name Christian Hackenberg was brought up.  Here was his response (via the NY Daily News):

"“The book on Christian is not closed. He’s only 22 years old,” Maccagnan said Tuesday in Florham Park during his end-of-season meeting with reporters. “He’s made progress, made development. This is going to be a good offseason for him. We’re kind of excited to see how he does with a second year in this system, and he’s going to have an opportunity in training camp to go out and play again.”"

For anyone who didn’t know, Hackenberg is one of only three quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era do be drafted in the first two rounds and not see the field in their first two seasons.

That’s nice to say, but does it really make sense to bring Hackenberg back at this point? And how excited are they? Contrast Maccagnan’s comment with Todd Bowles, who during the final game said he had no intention of bringing Hackenberg in.

Why not? The game didn’t mean anything. It’s not as if the Jets were playing like an offensive juggernaut. The reason is they believe that he is still nowhere near seeing the field after two years.

For a second round pick, that’s unfortunate and also very sad.

During the very same press conference, Maccagnan alluded to the fact that the team will be very active in free agency. Kirk Cousins has been associated with the Jets as a potential signing. He plays….QUARTERBACK! A move like that certainly negates the need for Hackenberg.

He also stated that Bryce Petty improved and he wouldn’t mind having Josh McCown back. What does that really tell us? He likes his guys, but could improve them. He wants to see them, but doesn’t know who will be back.

What he is telling us is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! And guess what? That’s good! We don’t really want Maccagnan broadcasting his strategy for other teams to hear. That would be bad. He is keeping his strategy close to the vest. Despite the nice words, these aren’t really insights. That’s a good thing.
