What is the biggest question remaining for the New York Yankees heading into the new season?

The New York Yankees have a few questions heading into the 2018 season. Who will be at third base, who will be the designated hitter, how the lineup will look and many others. The biggest question however is not who’s on the field but it is the question of how will Aaron Boone do in his first year as manager.

Aaron Boone has no experience as a manager and he will be taking over one of the most talented teams in all of baseball next season. No one knows how he will go about making decisions and no one knows how he will react to the high pressure of the job.

Right off the bat Aaron Boone will need to make some serious decisions. One of the biggest decisions being who will be the designated hitter. The Yankees have an overcrowded outfield which means the DH will be Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Brett Gardner, or Jacoby Ellsbury.

More from Empire Writes Back

Of those five there is one player whose bat doesn’t add as much as the others, Jacoby Ellsbury. With that he is taken out of consideration for any spot which leaves us four players. Aaron Judge has a fantastic bat and is a great outfielder which means he will stay in right field. Brett Gardner is a fantastic outfielder with a decent bat, but he is not a power hitter, which means he will stay in left field.

That leaves us two players, Giancarlo Stanton, and Aaron Hicks and it leaves us with center field as the open position. Aaron Hicks has experience as a center fielder and Giancarlo Stanton does not. Also, Giancarlo Stanton is more of a power hitter than Aaron Hicks is which means being DH would allow him to focus on hitting only and with 59 home runs last season that would only help.

That means the best choice would be to slide Giancarlo Stanton into the designated hitter slot. This would allow him to focus solely on hitting without having to worry about fielding nearly as much. Now that he is going to play 81 games at a stadium with a short porch you can expect his numbers to go up, and if he were to be designated hitter those numbers would skyrocket.

The second question Boone would have to answer is who will be the third baseman. If the Yankees bring back Todd Frazier, then the question gets that much more complicated. If they do not bring back Todd Frazier there is no question at all, the answer would be Gleyber Torres.

Next: Yankees third base options not named Machado

Torres is Major League Baseball’s number two prospect, behind only Shohei Ohtani. With that being said, Torres is more than ready to be called up to the Major Leagues. It all depends on how the next couple of weeks unfold and if the Yankees decide to bring in any other third basemen.

Aaron Boone is like a 16-year-old who just got his license, and he is being given the keys to the Millennium Falcon. He has one of the best jobs in baseball and he has some serious decisions to make. We will see how he reacts to having to make these decisions, and how he goes about making this decision.
