Who are the five best centerfielders in New York Mets history?

The New York Mets have been built upon good pitching and good defense. Look back at the teams in this franchise’s history that won championships and that is what they will have in common. They all could pitch and they all could play defense. Shea Stadium and Citi Field are both built for defense and pitching so that is how the home team built their squads.

Who doesn’t enjoy watching Juan Lagares roam center field in New York? Whenever a guy plays the role of defensive replacement, there is a good reason. He can flash the leather. Lagares already has two Gold Gloves to his credit and a .986 career fielding percentage. That’s a center fielder, ladies and gentlemen.

However, Lagares does not make this list. With a batting average of only .257, he isn’t enough of an all-around player to qualify as one of the five best in franchise history. We have been going back through each position and looking at the five best players in team history to play it. Most recently we looked at left field. Now we move on to center.
