New York Mets fans deserve more than they get from the team
New York Mets fans deserve more than the Wilpons seem willing to give.
The New York Mets sport a dedicated throng of fans. It’s not easy to survive the ups and downs with this team, and the people that do deserve all the credit in the world. Through the years, the team has often fluctuated between operating like a big market team and a small market team. They enhance the roster, or they don’t. They compete or they don’t. All the while, Mets fans are there ready to cheer at the first sign of a turnaround.
The constant has been the information, or lack thereof, that flows from the Mets to the fans, and that starts with the Wilpons. Have you ever noticed that we don’t know what REALLY goes on with this team? Are they in financial trouble? Were they ever? Are the Wilpons just content to make their money and put the team on a budget? It’s always been partial answers as to why the Mets function the way they do and that starts from the top.
Marc Carig of Newsday is a beat reporter for the Mets and he has had enough. He took to his forum to completely take the Mets organization to task. He believes that the lack of accountability that these owners take is a shame and completely uncalled for.
"To the Wilpons, it’s as if nobody is worthy of a straight answer. That’s the biggest failure of all. Just two years after winning a pennant, the Mets have wasted whatever goodwill they had with their fans, all because they refuse to speak with them."

That, in and of itself, captures the frustration that is universal for Mets fans. Honesty would go a long way with this fan base. If the fans disapprove as to what is going on they would be provided an understanding as to why it is happening.
Don’t we all feel that way? Even in your jobs, if you don’t like what you need to do, doesn’t it seem more reasonable if you are given an understanding of why you must do it? I know it makes a difference for me.
Carig goes on to talk about other ways the Mets can use their money if payroll is going to be an issue, such as increasing scouting in some of the world regions. But, he goes back to the most important part:
"The Wilpons can start by publicly owning up to how this franchise is run. They can begin speaking for themselves rather than leaving the dirty work to middle men. But until they show the courage to take that first step, the Mets and their fans are doomed to repeat the cycle, pulling for a franchise that will never actually do enough to win."
Harsh but true.

Everybody knows the Wilpons got mixed up in the Bernie Madoff situation. Ownership should just be up front with what is going on. If the payroll must be limited, just admit to the world that it is, and tell us why. Mets fans have stuck around through everything, they would remain through that as well.
Unless, of course, there is no plan, which opens a whole new discussion.
