What does the trade for Giancarlo Stanton really mean for the New York Yankees?

Following the trade for Giancarlo Stanton, the New York Yankees 2018 World Series odds jumped from 8-1 to 6-1 per Westgate. This shows you just how much of a help Stanton will be in New York. But this trade goes beyond Giancarlo Stanton.

Since the Yankees traded away Starlin Castro we will see a lot more of Ronald Torreyes and Gleyber Torres. Which means we will see a lot of the ‘Toe-Night Show’ in 2018. In Torreyes’ 108 regular season games last year he had a .292 batting average to go along with 35 runs, 36 RBI and three home runs.

Torreyes has the potential to be one of the better second baseman in the league and without Starlin Castro we may see him play to his full potential as he will be the everyday second baseman for the Yankees. Gleyber Torres will be impacted because we will see him play a lot more since Chase Headley  will not be playing every single game.

More from Empire Writes Back

Last season with Greg Bird injured for a good part of the season we saw Chase Headley playing first base. Now that Bird is back the Yankees will have to make a decision on who will be playing third base in order to keep the bats of Hicks and Gardner still in the lineup.

Here is what the Yankees lineup could look like next year:

LF- Brett Gardner

SS- Didi Gregorius

RF- Aaron Judge

DH- Giancarlo Stanton

C- Gary Sanchez

1B- Greg Bird

CF- Aaron Hicks

3B- Chase Headley

2B- Ronald Torreyes

Bench- Gleyber Torres, Jacoby Ellsbury, Clint Frazier, Tyler Austin

This Yankees team has the potential to be the best team in the league next season if they stay healthy and play to their potential. The biggest question is who will be DH; with Todd Frazier likely signing elsewhere the Yankees must evaluate some players at DH and decide how their outfield will take place.

Next: Making sense of the new Yankees manager

With Giancarlo Stanton, the outfield is overcrowded and something must give way. Whether it be Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks or Brett Gardner, one of them must be DH. The likely outcome will be Aaron Hicks and/or Giancarlo Stanton splitting time in the outfield and as DH.

Whatever Aaron Boone decides on, it will be tough to screw something like this up. It will be interesting to see what role Jacoby Ellsbury will play and who will be the DH down the line.
