Giancarlo Stanton listed the New York Yankees as one of four teams he would accept a trade to but should the Yankees want Stanton?

According to Craig Mish of SiriusXM, Giancarlo Stanton has listed just four teams that he would accept a trade to. The New York Yankees are one of the teams on that exclusive list.

Stanton is a superstar with other-worldly power. The only two players to hit over 50 home runs in 2017: Stanton (59) and Aaron Judge (52).

An opportunity to pair baseball’s top two sluggers together only seems possible in fantasy baseball or a video game. In theory, the Yankees should jump at the chance to put Stanton and Judge in the same lineup. However, trading for Stanton is not as simple as it may seem.

The New York Yankees already have a pretty good right fielder.

Do the Yankees really need Giancarlo Stanton? They already have a superstar slugger in right field in Aaron Judge.

After hitting a record 52 home runs his rookie year, Judge is destined for 35+ homers every year. Having two such players is nice but is it necessary?

Judge and Stanton are both solid defenders who likely won’t want to be permanent DHs. Both are also 6’7″ and may be too big to play left or center field.

Having Judge and Stanton in same the lineup is great, but there may not be room for both in the field.

The outfield in general is clogged up.

With two great right fielders who likely won’t want to DH, perhaps you move one of them to another outfield spot.

However, Brett Gardner is playing Gold Glove-caliber defense in left field and Jacoby Ellsbury and Aaron Hicks are fighting for playing time in center field. Not to mention, Clint Frazier is waiting for an opportunity that Stanton would further delay.

Not only do the Yankees already have a great right fielder but they have so much outfield depth that they’ve already created a logjam that Stanton would further complicate.

Stanton’s contract won’t help the Yankees get under the luxury tax threshold.

Stanton still has 10 years/$295 million remaining on the megadeal he signed in 2014 and the Miami Marlins are hoping to dump all of that money in a trade.

The New York Yankees have expressed interest in getting under the $197 million luxury tax threshold in 2018 and taking on Stanton’s contract will not help.

If the Yankees can send Jacoby Ellsbury and the remaining three years/$68 million left on his contract to Miami, New York would stay in good shape but there’s little chance the Marlins would take such a big contract back as they’re trying to cut payroll.

Giancarlo Stanton is a great player, but the Yankees have to decide if he’s worth sacrificing a chance to pursue the likes of Bryce Harper and Manny Machado next offseason.

The Miami Marlins also want top prospects.

The Marlins want to dump Stanton’s salary and get top prospects in return. This seems unrealistic but when a talent like Giancarlo Stanton hits the trade market, anything can happen.

Miami may target Clint Frazier, Chance Adams, Justus Sheffield, Estevan Florial, or Domingo Acevedo, among others.

Is Stanton worth gutting the farm system? The Yankees finally have a minor league system to be proud of after years of depleting it for overpaid veterans.

Do they want to risk repeating that mistake?

Giancarlo Stanton is a phenomenal talent and pairing him up with Aaron Judge in the middle of the Yankee lineup is quite enticing. However, Stanton won’t come cheap and he won’t come without plenty of risk.

Stanton would accept a trade to the New York Yankees but should the Yankees feel the same way?
