Kirk Cousins

Kirk Cousins will be a free agent once again this offseason after receiving the franchise tag two years in a row.

Most people think Cousins will be leaving the nation’s capital after this season. Front office drama has prevented the Redskins from getting a long-term deal done with Cousins and he’s likely moving on this offseason.

After the San Francisco 49ers traded for Jimmy Garoppolo, the favorites to sign Cousins are now out of the race. This opens the door for a number of teams to come into play.

Could the New York Giants be one of those teams?

Well, they’d certainly have to move Manning’s contract as well as a few others. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Brandon Marshall, and Dwayne Harris would have to be cut (which might happen anyway). It could also cost the Giants a chance to re-sign Weston Richburg or Justin Pugh.

If the new Giants GM (assuming Jerry Reese does not return) can create the cap space to sign Cousins, he probably has the most talent of any of the options.

However, fitting a $25+ million contract into New York’s salary cap with the upcoming free agencies of Odell Beckham Jr. and Landon Collins may be too hard.

Although stealing Kirk Cousins from the division rival Redskins would be a win-win for the Giants, there are teams out there with better salary cap situations that are more likely to sign him.
