The New York Mets are working to fill the holes in their lineup. Second base may get taken care of via trade.

The New York Mets are transitioning into a new era. For better or for worse, Terry Collins is out and Mickey Callaway is in. More importantly for many Mets fans, including myself, they are changing how they condition their players. Maybe the team can stay out of the training room in Callaway’s first year. Heck, a guy can dream, can’t he?

With all of that, there is a roster to be constructed for 2018. It’s a roster that has holes that need to be filled. They can’t cover it all up with just hard throwers from the mound. One of the holes that needs filling is second base. According to Jon Morosi, the Mets are working on it:

Even though Kinsler is 35 years old, and normally you have seen me criticize moves for older players, I would welcome this move.

First of all, the commitment would not be long-term. According to Rob Piersall of Metsmerized Online, Kinsler had a one-year option remaining before hitting the 2018 open market. Yes it would be an $11 million commitment but the marriage would only be for one year.

At the very least, if it doesn’t work out, we know who Sandy will try to move at the trade deadline.

Keep in mind the power of a veteran influence on a young infield. David Wright is trying to make his way back but that seems unrealistic. There may be a young player there as well. The Mets have Dominic Smith and Amed Rosario returning as well to start around the infield. Bringing in a 12-year veteran could serve as a stabilizing force that this group desperately needs. Remember, they are young, but they don’t have forever to win. These pitchers are going to earn their money soon and the Mets would like nothing better than to win a title while they are still all in New York.

Kinsler is durable, playing over 100 games in each of his 12 seasons. He is a .981 fielder, spending his career at second base. He is a career .273 hitter with some pop left as he hit 22 home runs last year. Kinsler might just be the perfect fit on the Mets infield if they can finalize this trade.
