Ten games in, the New York Jets are right in the hunt for a spot in the 2017 playoffs.

If any New York Jets fan had talked about the playoffs prior to the beginning of the 2017 season, the answer likely would have been:

But look where we are now. The Jets are coming out of their bye week with a record of 4-6. Not only that, but as they prepare for their next game, the team finds itself only one game behind the final AFC Wild Card position (via Gang Green Nation). That’s right, there is a logjam of six teams at 4-6, and the Jets are one of them. The final playoff spot is currently held by the Baltimore Ravens with a 5-5 record.

This is why they talk about any given Sunday and why they play the games on the field, not on paper.

How have the Jets gotten the job done? They have had a bend but don’t break defense as of late. Over their last three games, the opponents have scored in the red zone 45.45% of the time, good for seventh in the NFL. That’s a defense that may be allowing teams into the red zone but has been keeping the points to a minimum.

On offense they are a team that is finding their niche with Josh McCown at the helm. They have been up and down, evidenced by the output against the Buccaneers. But for the most part they have been efficient, with budding talent like Robby Anderson and Austin Seferian-Jenkins coming to the forefront. If you sleep on the Jets in 2017, they will come up and bite you.

Now am I guaranteeing a run at the playoffs over the last six games? Hardly. With the Chiefs, Panthers, Patriots and Saints coming up, wins are going to be hard to come by much less a playoff spot. But stranger things have happened. Assuming they don’t, the Jets have given us some fun times in 2017 and they were unexpected. Isn’t that all we could have asked for?
