New York Yankees: 5 free agent options for the final starting rotation spot
By Sean Dyer
Jhoulys Chacin
Jhoulys Chacin is coming off of a solid 2017 season for the San Diego Padres. He didn’t get much attention for the lowly Padres, but Chacin went 13-10 with a 3.89 ERA.
Chacin works the corners like CC Sabathia and won’t challenge too many hitters. He looks for soft contact as opposed to swings and misses. Chacin struck out just 153 batters in 180.1 innings.
Chacin has pitched most of his career in the NL West, pitching six seasons for the Colorado Rockies and one season each for the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres. Moving to the AL East could be a concern as there are some quality offenses that Chacin would have to face. His finesse approach may not work as well.
Soon to be 30 years old, Chacin could be looking for a three or four-year deal which may be too long of a commitment for the New York Yankees. With top prospects Chance Adams, Justus Sheffield, and Domingo Acevedo not far from the major leagues, New York may not want to sign Chacin long-term.
If Chacin is willing to sign a short-term contract, however, he would likely sign for around the $12 million per year that Sabathia would sign for.
