From the three standout quarterbacks in the upcoming draft class, one has stood out to the New York Jets.

Since initially being viewed as the worst roster in the NFL this year, the New York Jets have overcome much adversity. Gutting their roster this past spring included the release of multiple veterans this offseason obviously exposed New York’s rebuilding intentions. A new quarterback is expected to come out of this rebuild, and Mike Maccagnan reportedly “loves” Josh Allen from Wyoming.

As we all know, the Jets went from terrible to mediocre overnight. If they end up with the 10th or 11th pick in the draft, they’ll most likely be unable to select Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen. That, however, doesn’t mean they can’t still grab a new arm.

Maccagnan has had his scouts spend an increased amount of time out in Wyoming this season. More than halfway through the NFL season, Josh Allen has drawn the most attention from New York than any other prospect in the 2018 class.

Prior to the season, Allen drew speculation of being the top pick out of college. Due to lack of talent on his team and less publicity, he somewhat dropped off the map this season. This doesn’t diminish the fact that Allen has the strongest arm in college football. This attribute is a valuable asset to any young quarterback, and it gives Allen great potential to stand out in the NFL. He recently injured his arm against Air Force, which caused him to miss Wyoming’s most recent game against Fresno State. The Jets need to take caution with this, because if it lingers, Allen could be a risky take.

New York believes the young arm would best suit their offense, opposed to the other quarterbacks in the draft. Is it possible that they could select Allen even if they move up in the draft order by the end of the season? It’s probable.

Would it be the smartest choice? Both Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold are having borderline disappointing seasons. Taking Allen at any point wouldn’t be the end of the world. The stats for both Los Angeles quarterbacks dipped this season. Josh Allen’s, though also decreasing, remain near the level of both Darnold and Rosen.

Ultimately, Josh Allen would be a great choice if the Jets land a later pick. Free agency is an option for landing a quarterback as well, but this direction can help the Jets save some money for an offensive line.

It would be fascinating to see the Jets take any quarterback in the first round this April. The looming question is, will it be the right one? These three guys could have potential to be the next Manning, Rivers, and Roethlisberger. Throw in the stud running back from Penn State, and you’re looking at one really good NFL Draft, one the Jets cannot mess up.
