New York Giants: Time to give Davis Webb a shot
It’s time for the New York Giants to look ahead to the future.
Not what you expected, is it New York Giants fans? The season has been reminiscent of the Jets in 2016 and the Mets this past year. In both of those situations there were a lot of expectations, but injuries and underperformances sent the season out of control. It must be contagious here in the tri-state area because the Giants are afflicted with the same problem as they sit with a 2-8 record.
To their credit, the Giants did put up an upset of the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, beating them in overtime by the score of 12-9. When he needed to get it done, Eli Manning led a drive in the latter part of overtime that ended in a game-winning field goal. However, that doesn’t change the elephant in the room, and it doesn’t change what the Giants should do going forward.
It’s time to let Eli Manning take a seat and to see what Davis Webb can do. I know, Giants fans, that sounds blasphemous. The man has a streak going, how could I possibly make this suggestion? But in the long run, it will be for the good of the team to see what Webb does in game situations.
First off, we all know that Manning’s days are numbered. He isn’t getting any younger and there is nothing left to prove. He is 36 years old. It’s going to be coming to an end sooner rather than later. If it wasn’t they wouldn’t have drafted a quarterback. The future is getting closer and closer. What are the Giants going to do at quarterback?
If they don’t want to use Geno Smith in a game that makes sense. Everybody knows what Geno Smith is. Just watch some tape from his time with the Jets and you can learn all you need to know. He would still be dressed in green if Smith was worth a look as a potential future starter. So if he is passed over it makes sense.
Next: Does the consecutive games streak play into the Giants decision at quarterback?
But Davis Webb is different. The Giants invested draft capital in this player. Teams don’t draft a quarterback unless they have designs on them playing. He could be the heir apparent to Eli Manning but we don’t know. Save Manning for one more run in 2018 while seeing what Webb can do in a lost season. It just makes sense.
