New York Yankees: Approaching the offseason like it’s 2013
By Sean Dyer
Jay Bruce
Sure, Shohei Otani can DH when he’s not on the mound, but that means the Yankees need a DH every fifth day when Otani is pitching. That’s where Jay Bruce comes in.
Otani working double duty could also prove to be too much for him or too stressful for the Yankees, at which point Bruce would become the everyday designated hitter. Bruce could also provide insurance at first base if Greg Bird runs into more health issues and you can never have too many outfielders, right?
Cashman tried to trade for Bruce this past August but the Mets turned him down. Now that no one can get in the way of him and his money, Cashman will lock Bruce down.
Bruce is coming off of a 36 HR/101 RBI season and his left-handed swing should only play up in Yankee Stadium. He’s also already played in New York and dealt with the media (yes, Queens counts).
