Kony Ealy

This normally goes the opposite way. Usually it’s the Jets that let someone go that didn’t fit in, and then Bill Belichick turns them into a star. Here we have the opposite scenario. Belichick had no use for Kony Ealy so he was released. He has joined the New York Jets and become, maybe not a star, but certainly an important piece of the puzzle, especially on passing downs.

Pro Football Focus has recognized his work to date. His overall grade of 80.4 is good for 32nd in the league amongst all edge defenders. Keep in mind that is only in 305 snaps as a part-time player. In the pass rush, his grade is 81.9, moving him up to 19th in the league. Again, he has been a part-time player, yet he sits in the top twenty here. Clearly he has been an asset to the Jets defense.

No, Ealy has not put up big sack numbers yet with only one to his credit. But that is not the only way to influence the passer. If you can’t get to the quarterback what do you do? KNOCK IT DOWN! Ealy has done that and more, being credited with eight passes defended. Even if he doesn’t get there, he can cause problems by pushing the pocket, making the quarterback move, …etc. He was one solid acquisition and a big reason the Jets sit at 4-5.
