More from Empire Writes Back

We all know that when a sports franchise enters a league as an expansion team, it is a hodgepodge of players. The team has to field a squad that can play, so they need players fast. That initial roster is typically made up of players drafted from other organizations in the expansion draft or other means.

That was the case with Richie Ashburn, purchased from the Chicago Cubs in 1961. A career outfielder, Ashburn spent 12 previous years with the Philadelphia Phillies, breaking into the league in 1948, and two with the Cubs before his acquisition by the Mets.

It was only one year or Ashburn would have potentially been able to move higher on the list. However his one season wearing the number one for the Mets was quite good. In 389 official at bats he hit .306 with 7 home runs and 28 RBI. He played the outfield and even played some second base, marking a first for Ashburn. He held his own with a .900 fielding percentage.
