New York Yankees: Biggest Needs This Offseason
By Sean Dyer
Left-Handed Relief Pitcher
Bullpen help? Are you kidding me?? How is the New York Yankees bullpen not stacked enough???
I know I know. The Yankees have arguably the best bullpen in baseball. The one thing they are missing though is a left-handed reliever who can shut down left-handed hitters.

As dominant as New York’s bullpen is, it is very right-handed-heavy. The only lefty relievers the Yankees have are Aroldis Chapman and Chasen Shreve.
Chapman, of course, is the closer. We won’t see him come in to get out a lefty in the middle innings.
As for Shreve, I wouldn’t consider him a shutdown lefty. Although he pitched well against left-handed hitters in 2017 (.164/.235/.262), from 2014-16 lefties actually hit better against Shreve (.234/.324/.413) than righties did (.214/.317/.440).
If a backup catcher wasn’t a big need, a left-handed reliever is frivolous. However, it could be worth a look on the free agent market. As great as the New York Yankees bullpen is, there’s nothing wrong with getting better.
