The Buffalo Bills are continuing to build toward the future while still competing in 2017. Their latest move was trading Marcell Dareus to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

All season, the Buffalo Bills have had a recurring theme, motto, etc. “Trust the Process.”

It is painted somewhere in the confines of One Bills drive and the Bills have not failed to live by it. The team already traded away Sammy Watkins and Ronald Darby this offseason.

Now, it is “Mr. Big Stuff” Marcell Dareus.

First reported by Adam Schefter, the Buffalo Bills traded the once promising defensive tackle to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The trade is reportedly for a sixth-round pick in the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft.

Also in some reports, this could become a fifth-round pick if Dareus meets certain incentives.

The coaches and fans have been less than thrilled with Dareus’ play thus far this year. The former third overall (yes third overall) pick has only one sack so far this year and has not had more than five quarterback takedowns in a year since 2014.

This reunites Marcell with his former head coach Doug Marrone in Jacksonville.

Under Marrone, Dareus was selected to two Pro Bowls (2013 and 2014) and was on his way to becoming an elite defensive tackle.

The change of regime and a big money contract have resulted in a decline in his production.

His production has hit an all-time low this year seeing fewer snaps and a visible lack of effort.

We all knew his days in Buffalo were numbered, but his contract made it hard to believe the team was ready to give up on him anytime soon.

However, Friday’s events show they indeed were.

The Jaguars are believed to pay a decent portion of Dareus’ remaining contract. The Jaguars are off to one of their best starts in a long time and want to bring in someone with a lot of potential to try to win a very weak NFC South.

The Buffalo Bills remain consistent in this “process” as they trade away another expensive, or potentially expensive player for draft picks to build a winning team in the future.

Dareus was drafted during the Buddy Nix regime, but his contract extension was finalized under Doug Whaley. Another underlying theme in the Brandon Beane era is getting rid of a majority of the Whaley moves.

The official team twitter announced the trade as official shortly after the news broke.

Buffalo likely did the right thing trading away a superstar who didn’t want to play for them anymore. Hopefully, this one does not come back to haunt them.

It would say a lot about the Bills’ current leadership if Dareus goes back to his potentially elite ways. I think he just wants to be back with Marrone where he was successful.

The Buffalo Bills are still very much contenders in 2017 sitting at 4-2. This could be a win-win trade for two teams trying to end long playoff droughts.
