New York Yankees: Top 15 Moments of the 2017 Season
By Sean Dyer
1. New York Yankees Rally in Game 4 of ALCS, Tie Series at 2-2
There are two reasons why this tops Didi Gregorius’ Wild Card home run on my list of top moments. 1. The implications were much higher as this comeback occurred in the ALCS. 2. I was lucky enough to be one of the 48,000+ in the building that night.
When people say the new Yankee Stadium was louder that night than they’ve ever heard it, they’re not joking. I thought the whole place was about to come down.
A three-run double in the top of the sixth by Yuli Gurriel broke a scoreless tie. The Houston Astros then added another run in the seventh on an error by Starlin Castro.
The unearned run was deflating as overcoming a four-run deficit with just nine outs to go is no easy task. The Yankees were also down 2-1 in the series and couldn’t afford a home loss with Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander lined up to pitch the next two games for Houston.
Not to worry. This team is never out of it. Aaron Judge got the comeback started, leading off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run. The Astros then went to the bullpen and Chris Devenski was welcomed with a Gregorius triple and Gary Sanchez sac fly. The seventh inning would end with Houston up just 4-2.

Todd Frazier then led off the eighth with a single and Chase Headley followed with a single of his own but of a very different variety. Headley stumbled and fell in between first and second trying to stretch his single into a double. Somehow, Headley got up and slid into second safely after the Astros threw back to first before trying to get Headley at second. You could tell something was on the Yankees’ side.
Brett Gardner cut the lead to one with an RBI-groundout and Aaron Judge tied things up with an RBI-double off the wall in left. The New York Yankees had taken full control of the momentum.
Didi then poked a single through the left side, making it first and third with just one out. Gary Sanchez finished things off, drilling a two-run double to right-center on a hit-and-run. It was 6-4 Yanks and Yankee Stadium was ROCKING.
Aroldis Chapman worked a one-two-three ninth inning and the series was tied. Comeback complete.
Obviously, the New York Yankees fell short of their ultimate goal, losing the ALCS in seven games, but this comeback was one for the ages.
This game will be looked back on as the game where Yankee Stadium came alive and the groundwork was laid out for the New York Yankees’ next dynasty.
