New York Mets: Fans react to the hiring of Mickey Callaway
So what do the fans think about Mickey Callaway becoming the next manager of the New York Mets?
The New York Mets have headed outside the family for their next manager. Despite the talk about Kevin Long, Robin Ventura, and other Mets alumni players and coaches, Sandy Alderson went a different route. He decided to go with the Indians pitching coach, Mickey Callaway. It’s an out of the box move that could mean a lot for our young pitching staff especially.
We talked about Callaway yesterday, going over his resume as both a player and a coach. It is bold to employ a first-time manager at this level but it has been done before. Callaway certainly knows what to do with a pitching staff, ask the pitchers in Cleveland. The hiring could be great, or it could be awful. It’s the classic “boom or bust” type of move.
But what do you think? As I thought about this move I wondered what Mets fans think about it. So we decided to find out. Simply, I put the question out there on Twitter for fans to react. Here are the responses we received about the move for Mickey Callaway:
I love the phrase “cautiously optimistic”. It makes perfect sense in this situation. He was a great pitching coach and got a lot out of Cleveland. We just don’t know how he will do as the top man. He has no experience as a manager. He has the potential to be very good, we just don’t know until we see the team next year and going forward.
The influence on the pitchers seems to be the biggest theme the fans are taking out. It makes sense. He has done wonders with pitchers. Ask Corey Kluber. Callaway is terrific with his pitchers. The question will be whether or not he can get it done in the leading role. We will find out soon, won’t we?
Here is one more answer:
Don’t count out the experience factor. This guy knows what it takes to get to the series. Yes the Mets went to the series in 2015, but the core of this team is still very young. Bringing experience to the franchise around them will never hurt. There is no doubt that Callaway brings a lot of good things to New York.
We shall see soon enough if they translate into managerial skills.
