It’s time to grade each of the New York Jets position units from the Jets 24-17 loss to the New England Patriots.

The New York Jets are now 3-3 and will travel to Miami for a Week 7 matchup with the divisional rival Dolphins. Let’s start our Week 6 grades off with Gang Green’s signal-caller.

C -. . . . Quarterback

If it wasn’t for Josh McCown’s hot start on Sunday, this grade would be much lower. McCown had a fast start out of the gate for the New York Jets with two quick touchdowns to give the team an early 14-0 lead. McCown would finish 31-of-47 for 354 yards on the day, but it was his mistakes that hurt the Jets in crucial spots.

At the end of the first half, on New England’s side of the field, McCown threw a terrible pass on an out route intended for Robby Anderson that was intercepted by Malcolm Butler. This is a throw that he has struggled with all season and it killed the Jets for two reasons.

First, with forty seconds left in the half, the Jets had plenty of time to get into field goal range and on second down, the last thing he wanted to do was underthrow a deep passing pattern.

Second, at the very least, the Jets could have kept the ball away from Tom Brady and go into the locker room with a 14-7 lead. Instead, they allowed Tom Brady to tie the game before half and shift the momentum.

The Jets still had a chance, but another poor throw behind an open receiver, on a fourth down play where I didn’t agree with the call, McCown was intercepted again in Patriots territory. In that situation, I know he has to make a play, but it was an awful throw behind an open tight end.

The New York Jets have learned that you can’t make mistakes and beat New England, and McCown made too many critical mistakes on Sunday.
