Get the Running Game Right

The Jaguars are doing a lot of things right in the early going this season. Many expected them to flop once again. Typically, they bring in a lot of talent and can’t seem to get things together. This year, however, it has been different. The defense is coming around and annual liability Blake Bortles has posted a passer rating of 93.2 so far. A litany of high draft picks could finally being putting it all together.

More from Empire Writes Back

One thing the Jaguars have not done well is defend the run. As they enter this game they are ranked 28th in the league, allowing 135.3 yards per game and 4.8 yards per carry. Numbers like that will never get it done. Derrick Henry gashed them for 92 yards on 14 carries in the loss to the Titans. In the two wins Jacksonville still managed to allow a 65 yard rusher with a 3.8 yards per carry average and an 82 yard rusher on only nine carries. If the Jets are going to get the run game going, this is the week to do it.

The three-headed monster may look a bit different this week:

Look for Bilal Powell and Elijah McGuire to get the majority of the work, with Travaris Cadet coming in to spell them where he feels comfortable with the plays. The Jets are going to have to establish some sort of presence in the ground game. Jacksonville’s defense is number one against the pass so the throwing lanes are not going to be there without help. Get Powell going and give McGuire some carries as well. If Travaris Cadet plays, get him into his comfort zone and start moving the chains on the ground.
