Who earned their wings for the New York Jets in their victory over Miami?

Sorry to the tank crowd, the New York Jets will not finish the season 0-16. They came up big with a huge performance against Miami, holding a shutout until the final play of the game. They saw the defense make improvements all over the place. They tackled better, they were stout against the run and made Jay Cutler throw bad passes. The offense moved the football and the result was a 20-6 victory.

As we do each and every week, we give out game balls to three players. Since they are Jets, however, we give them “wings”. So, who earned their wings for the Jets this week?

Robby AndersonAnderson, who was touted as the Jets number one receiver heading into the season, had been silent over the first two games. That changed against the Dolphins, when he caught three passes for a game-high 95 yards and a beautiful 69 yard touchdown pass from Josh McCown. Welcome to the 2017 season, Robby Anderson.

Josh McCown: Nobody expected McCown to be a world beater, and he hasn’t been one. However he has represented himself well and directed the offense as well as could be expected. Against Miami, he was about as good as we will ever see him. McCown completed 18 out of 23 passes for 249 yards and the touchdown to Anderson.

The Defense: How good was the defense? From top down they were simply outstanding. Other than a couple of penalties it was a banner day. They held Jay Ajayi to 16 yards on the ground and never let Cutler get into a rhythm. Cutler was sacked three times and forced off of his spot several more times. They simply played so well as a whole that there was no way to give something out to specific players.

Coach Todd Bowles could have gotten a set of wings as well. Despite the first two weeks, he said not to worry about the defense. He said he could fix the problems. The defense was sound fundamentally, and that is a credit to the coaching. Kudos to the staff for preparing the team well.
