The New York Yankees have been fighting like hell to get back atop the AL East but it just has not been enough. It seems that every time the Yankees win the Red Sox do too, and when the Yankees lose, the Red Sox follow. So if the season were to end today, what would the Postseason look like?

So if the season were to end today, the New York Yankees would be three games behind the Red Sox in the AL East and seven above the Twins for the wild card. This means that the Yankees would, unfortunately, have to play in the AL Wild Card game.

The last time the Yankees played in the AL Wild Card game, they were beaten in their own ballpark. They lost to the Astros back in 2015 with Masahiro Tanaka on the bump against the 2015 AL Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel.

Fortunately for the Yankees, however, they would be at home playing against the Minnesota Twins, a team which they just swept.

So let’s look at the season series between the Yankees and Twins:

July 17: Twins 4 – Yankees 2

July 18: Yankees – 6 Twins 3

July 19: Twins 6 – Yankees 1

Sept. 18: Yankees 2 – Twins 1

Sept. 19: Yankees 5 – Twins 2

Sept. 20: Yankees 11 – Twins 3

The New York Yankees managed to take the season series against Minnesota 4-2. Of the Yankees four wins, three of them were at home so you have to like their chances if they’re playing in New York.

Twins vs Yankees Wild Card Game Preview:

Twins: Ervin Santana (15-8, 3.34 ERA)  (0-1, 7 hits, 2 earned runs against Yankees)

Yankees: Luis Severino (13-6, 3.03 ERA)  (0-0, 5 hits, 3 earned runs against Twins)

More from New York Yankees

The Yankees best option against the Twins would be Luis Severino. While he did struggle Thursday afternoon, lasting only three innings against Minnesota, he has been New York’s most consistent starter. Aside from Thursday, he has gone at least six innings with three earned runs or less in seven of his last eight starts.

Severino would be the best option considering Masahiro Tanaka is very inconsistent, as is Sonny Gray. With that being said, Severino could most likely give the Yankees at least six innings and let up three runs at most, keeping New York in the game.

Let’s say the Yankees manage to get past the Twins and into the Divisional round, who would they play and what would the series look like?

If the season were to end today and the New York Yankees got past the Twins and into the Divisional round, the Bronx Bombers would take on the Cleveland Indians. Yes, that same Indians team that just won 22 games in a row and broke the American League record for consecutive wins.

So let’s look at the season series against the Indians:

Aug. 3: Indians 5 – Yankees 1

Aug. 4: Indians 7 – Yankees 2

Aug. 5: Yankees 2 – Indians 1

Aug. 6: Yankees 8 – Indians 1

Aug. 28: Indians 6 – Yankees 2

Aug. 29: Postponed

Aug. 30: Indians 2 – Yankees 1

Aug. 30: Indians 9 – Yankees 4

Unfortunately for the Yankees, they have had a very tough time against the Indians. In their seven games against the Tribe, they have only won two. So if the New York Yankees do manage to get past the Twins in the Wild Card Game, it’s going to be very tough for them to get past the AL Cy Young front-runner Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians.
