The New York Yankees gave up a lot to acquire Sonny Gray at the trade deadline, but the investment is certainly paying off.

When the New York Yankees traded away top prospects OF Dustin Fowler, INF Jorge Mateo, and RHP James Kaprielian to the Oakland A’s for Sonny Gray, it initially seemed as if the Yankees gave away a king’s ransom.

However, if there was any doubt whether the trade was worth it or not, Sonny Gray has put that to rest. Since the trade deadline deal that brought him to New York, Gray has been nothing short of masterful in pinstripes.

Despite his 3-5 record, which is heavily correlated with a lack of run support, Gray has a 2.66 ERA with one complete game and 49 strikeouts in 50.2 innings pitched. The 27-year-old has shown in just eight games that the bright lights of New York have helped enhance the performance of the top-tier starting pitcher.

Gray has an elite repertoire of pitches that includes a 4-seam fastball that induces a lot of ground balls, an exceptional slider, a sweeping curve that has glove side movement, and an above-average changeup.

More from New York Yankees

Heading into the postseason, a pitcher like Sonny Gray is a true difference maker between a contender and pretender. With a one-two punch of Luis Severino, who’s having a CY Young season himself, and Sonny Gray, the New York Yankees will have a starting pitching combination that matches up very well against the upper echelon pitching staffs around the MLB.

With Gray under contract through 2019, along with his age and talent, it’s evident the New York Yankees have done very well with this trade.

Compared to the mid-season acquisitions of Jose Quintana by the Chicago Cubs and Yu Darvish by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the impact and success Sonny Gray has accomplished in his brief tenure in New York are clearly paying dividends.

Next: New York Yankees Offense Is Wasting Quality Starts

There have been no signs that Gray will give the Yankees anything other than what he’s been doing. The key moving forward, especially with the postseason in sight, is for the offense to do their part and put some runs on the board.

If the New York Yankees can get it together by the first week of October, whoever is in their way better be ready.
