New York Jets: Three mid-level players acquired by Mike Maccagnan who paid off in week one
Will Tye
Here is your Labor Day weekend move, and it was for a guy that didn’t even have to change his GPS to find his new team’s stadium.
Will Tye was an undrafted free agent that played the first two years of his career with the Giants. In that time, he became a reliable option for Eli Manning. He caught 90 passes and scored four touchdowns in two years, and that included a career-high 48 receptions last season. So it came to reason that he signed a one year contract with the Giants before the season worth $615,000 (per Spotrac).
The part that didn’t hold up to reason was Tye finding himself off of the Giants roster when the final cuts came out. Now, we all know the Jets needed more from the tight end position. Over the last two seasons, they haven’t HAD a tight end position. The only one with any experience, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, is out for the first two games due to a suspension. The Jets needed a guy with some experience to help these younger players and Tye fit the bill.
Against the Bills, Will Tye showed why letting him go was a questionable decision by Big Blue. He didn’t have a flashy performance but it was a reliable one. He caught all three of his targets for 34 yards. That is a pace for 48 receptions and 544 yards. No, that won’t bring him to a Pro Bowl anytime soon. But what it will do is give a very weak offense a talented option at tight end. That, once again, is on Mike Maccagnan.
