The New York Mets should either allow Terry Collins to retire or keep him. There is no justification to fire him.

Injuries. That’s about the only word that New York Mets fans have heard all season long. It seems that not a week can go by, sometimes not even a day, without another injury to a significant player. Whether it has been pitchers or positions players, the bumps just keep on coming, leaving many of us to speculate as to why the training staff still has their jobs. However, that’s for a different day.

Lately, the name Terry Collins has been thrown out and about in the midst of Mets fans. Specifically, the talk has been about how Collins won’t be back as the manager in 2018. Baseball insider Jon Heyman believes that all signs are pointed towards Collins’ departure, though nobody would say so directly.

Now in the past, Collins has talked about potentially not wanting to manager past the 2017 season. If he leaves, this had better be the reason. None of this is his fault so him being relieved of his duties would be entirely inappropriate.

Look at the list of names that has spent time on the disabled list:

  • Noah Syndergaard
  • Matt Harvey
  • Steven Matz
  • Yoenis Cespedes
  • Michael Conforto
  • Seth Lugo
  • David Wright

There have been countless others. If you really sat down and figured it out, you could probably count on one hand the amount of games that Collins had his entire roster healthy for. It’s miraculous how many wins he does have. What it shows is how much these players respect Collins and how much they like him. That element has to be taken into account.

We have all seen what Collins can do with this roster when it is healthy. They won the National League pennant and went to the World Series back in 2015. He can, and has, gotten a lot out of these players. His team plays hard for him and the fans like him. That is why nobody wants him to go.

Collins is also second in team history in managerial wins behind only Davey Johnson. I can’t imagine there being a Mets fan anywhere that doesn’t love Davey Johnson. Yes it takes longevity to get to a high win mark, but if you don’t know how to bring a team together you won’t ever get that mark. Terry understands how to do that, and is still doing it.

Don’t fire Terry Collins. It’s not the right move. He’s the right guy for this team.
