Here are notes and reactions to the New York Jets first depth chart of the new season.

Week one is getting closer and closer, New York Jets fans. Tonight the rival Patriots take the field, but we are just a few days away from the Jets opening the 2017 campaign against the Buffalo Bills. Week one is always exciting, even when your team doesn’t have high expectations. Every team starts with the same record, so at least on that first day, anything can happen.

With that, the Jets have released their first depth chart of the season. It’s standard for each team to publish a depth chart the week the season opens and the Jets are no different. There really weren’t a lot of surprises on it, but I wanted to give you some thoughts and reactions to the interesting parts that WERE there.

First and foremost, it was the right call to list Bryce Petty ahead of Christian Hackenberg. Just look at their respective performances during training camp. It wasn’t close and some argued that Petty did enough to earn the starting job. If the staff gave any credit to performance at all, Petty had to get the nod.

The only reason it might be considered a bit surprising is all of the chances that Hackenberg received during camp. One could have thought they would have made him the number two just so he could get another chance, faster, during the season.

Subtract Julian Howsare as he has been released. Eric Tomlinson is currently listed as the starting tight end, but that will likely become Austin Seferian-Jenkins after he returns from suspension.

The only other surprise on the offense was the listing of seven wide receivers. That is a big number and it is missing Jeremy Kerley that would bring the total to eight. Look for some movement before the game kicks off on Sunday afternoon.

The rest of the depth chart turned out the way it was expected to. It’s safe to assume that Jeremy Kerley’s name will be added to it in some capacity, be it offense, punt returner, or both. They didn’t bring him back to sit around and do nothing. Look for him to be added in the coming days.

Any surprises on the depth chart that I missed? Let us know.
