Get After the Quarterback

Time to face it, the Jets are going to have difficulty in the secondary. Why? Because they are all so young. Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye have a great deal of talent, nobody is saying no. But in the early going there are going to be mistakes. Morris Claiborne may be able to lock down receivers at times, but there will be times he gets beaten, and the same goes for the other corners. But two rookie safeties lends toward communications mistakes.

How do you balance that out? With a strong pass rush, that’s how. No secondary can cover forever, even the best of them. Eventually a wide receiver will find an open spot given enough time. If the defense can rush the passer, the secondary has less time to cover and the quarterback’s life becomes difficult. Looks like it will be Taylor as he has been cleared to play, but the Jets have the guys to rush the passer. Muhammad Wilkerson and Leonard Williams must be in their face all day, and adding Kony Ealy to the mix didn’t hurt either.

Even in the lean years, the Jets have proven that a pass rush is the great equalizer. It has been a long time since the Jets have won the AFC East, but they always seem to say in games against New England. Why is that? Because they always seem to have success getting to Tom Brady. He can’t set up the way he likes and all of a sudden the Patriots offense sputters. The same thing can happen if they get after the Bills. They tied for the league lead with 17 sacks in the preseason. They must continue that trend.
