The New York Giants have made a decision as to who will sit behind Eli Manning.

New York Giants fans had better hope that Eli Manning continues his consecutive starts streak. They don’t want to see this backup quarterback out there.

Josh Johnson and Geno Smith were batting it out this preseason to be the number two quarterback behind Eli Manning. Apparently, the Giants decision is in:

Smith did complete 66% of his passes during the preseason, but threw two interceptions. Josh Johnson, on the other hand, completed 64% of his passes but wasn’t picked off once. Johnson’s passer rating was 95.1 compared to Smith’s at a 75.8.

In the end, Ben McAdoo and company decided to go with Smith and his experience as a starter. That time coming in New York didn’t hurt his candidacy either, although his level of success is worth discussing.

With the Jets, Smith did flash brilliant talent, including a performance when he posted a perfect passer rating. He just never could get it together with his decisions. He held the ball too long and threw into too many tight windows, and that ended his time in green.

However, he deserves credit for fighting back from an ACL injury to win this job as the Giants number two. You just don’t want to see him too often.

Other notable cuts include K Mike Nugent and TE Will Tye. Many more to come as the day finishes out.
