New York Yankees Predictions Against the Red Sox and Playoff Scenarios
This series has some serious implications on the New York Yankees playoff hopes and the playoff picture in general. So what are the various scenarios in the AL Wild Card race?
Now onto the AL Wild Card race. The Yankees currently hold the number one AL Wild Card spot, only one game ahead of the Minnesota Twins, 2.5 in front of the Los Angeles Angels, and 3.5 in front of the Baltimore Orioles.
Let’s say the Yankees lose two of their next three like I had predicted. The Twins are currently playing the Kansas City Royals, who have lost six of their last seven. There is a very good chance that the Twins walk away with either a sweep or two out of the three games.

If the Yankees do in fact lose two of their next three and the Twins win two of their next three, then the Twins will tie the Yankees as the top team in the AL Wild Card race. If the Twins sweep the Royals, the Yankees will move down to one game back. For the sake of the conversation, we’re going to say the Twins win two of their three and move into a tie with the Yankees.
Now onto the Angels. The Angels have a three-game series with the Texas Rangers coming up. The Angels and Rangers faced off in a four-game series only last week. In that four-game series, the Rangers walked away with three of the four.
So with that, let’s say that the Rangers take two of the three from the Angels. If this were to happen, the Yankees would be clear from the Angels and they would maintain their 2.5 game lead.
Now onto the Orioles (who the Yankees will play next week). The Orioles play their next three games against the Toronto Blue Jays, who they lost to Thursday night.
We’re going to say that the Orioles manage to scrape out two of their next three and tie the Angels in the Wild Card race. If this happens, this would mean that the Yankees would sit 2.5 games ahead of the Orioles in both the Wild Card race and the AL East race.

So if everything pans out the way I just said, the AL Wild Card standings would look like this by the end of the weekend.
Team W/L GB
Twins 72-64 –
Yankees 72-64 –
Orioles 70-67 2.5
Angels 70-67 2.5
The New York Yankees better play their best baseball this weekend. They’ll be facing the Boston Red Sox, but they’ll be fighting off a few other teams as well.
