This series has some serious implications on the New York Yankees playoff hopes and the playoff picture in general. So what are the various scenarios in the AL East?

Here is what the AL East standings look like at the moment.

With Thursday night’s, win the Yankees moved up to 4.5 games back of the Red Sox with three games left in their series. If the games pan out in the way that I predicted, the Yankees will, unfortunately, be 5.5 games behind the Red Sox, exactly where they were when the series started.

However, if the Yankees can manage to win their next three games against the Red Sox, they will be only 1.5 games behind the Red Sox. On the other hand, if the Red Sox win the next three games, then the Yankees will be 7.5 back and probably lose footing in the Wild Card race as well. If the Yankees win two of the next three, then they will be right with the Red Sox at only 3.5 games back.
