Here are some observations from the New York Jets win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

10. 54. Final. 16. 30

The New York Jets finished up their preseason with the annual “Turnpike Tussle” with the Philadelphia Eagles. It wasn’t like other years as the Jets played their starters early in the game. They received a scare when Josh McCown took a shot to the ribs but he only missed one play. The Jets held on late and won the game by the score of 16-10, finalizing their preseason record at 2-2.

Clearly, the result is not the most important part of the preseason. There weren’t any major injuries which is always a big deal. Here are a few observations from the performance:

More from Empire Writes Back

  • Despite the fact that he will miss the first two games, Austin Seferian-Jenkins looks like a new man. He is slimmer and looking quicker than he ever did for Tampa Bay. If the touchdown reception from the game is any indication, “ASJ” is going to finally realize the talent the Buccaneers expected to see when they drafted him.
  • Josh McCown is clearly the top quarterback on this roster. It’s not saying much since the Jets have the worst quarterback situation in the league, but it’s true. In just the few series he ran, he was in command and had the ability to lead this team. We certainly saw that Christian Hackenberg isn’t ready. He completed some passes, but going 10-22 against backup defensive players is nothing to write home about. The Jets will need a quarterback come the 2018 NFL Draft.
  • “Revis Island” may be a thing of the past, but is “Kony Island” the wave of the future? Just acquired this week off of the waiver wire, Kony Ealy made his presence felt. Take a look:

Ealy may have been let go by New England but he could be quite the asset as part of the Jets defensive line rotation.

  • Elijah McGuire stood up and got noticed, carrying the ball five times for 56 yards. As the Jets seem to be shopping Matt Forte, McGuire could be the guy behind Bilal Powell before too long.
  • The defense was up and down. They did get some pressure on the quarterback, especially late in the game. Early, the first team defense had a tough time dealing with Matt McGloin and the backup wide receivers. However, the main assessment from the game and the preseason in general is that they are faster than they have been in ages. The defense will keep this team in games.
