MLB Players Weekend: New York’s Best Baseball Nicknames of All-Time
By Mike Vivalo
“The Babe”
A larger than life historical figure, George Herman Ruth was, is, and forever will be the #1 most iconic baseball figure of all-time. We can spend days recounting Ruth’s incredible baseball feats, but I’ll just mention my two favorites: 1. In 1920, he personally out-homered 14 of the other 15 teams with 54 bombs! Hall of Famer George Sisler was second in the league with 19. 2. As a pitcher in 1917, he went 24-13 with a 2.01 ERA in 326.1 innings and led the AL with 35 complete games.
ORIGIN: After being legally adopted by Baltimore Orioles owner Jack Dunn, players called him Dunn’s “New Babe”.
