New York Jets 2018 NFL Draft Prospects: Quarterbacks
By TJ Wengert
Josh Allen, Wyoming
First up, Josh Allen! When you look at Allen’s stats from last season, you see solid numbers but nothing crazy, and you see one big number you don’t want to see. He threw for 3,203 yards and 28 touchdowns, but he also had 15 interceptions. That’s more interceptions than games he played in! Also, when looking at his completion percentage, it leaves more to be desired at 56%.
Once you see Allen and how he plays, that’s where he catches your eyes. The rising junior stand at 6-foot-5, and weighs in at 233 pounds. When looking at his film, you see this giant be able to avoid defenders, get outside the pocket, throw across his body, and deliver a DOT down the field. Here are some of his highlights from last season (prepare to be blown away).
Allen clearly shows his size, athleticism, mobility, arm strength, and downfield accuracy that make him a top-tier prospect and a potential franchise quarterback. Not to mention, he has an advantage over the other QBs in the class in that he will have played in cold weather more often. It may not seem important, but some QBs can’t play in the cold, and if you want to be the quarterback of the Jets, you have to be able to play in low temperatures.
What it all boils down to, is if Allen can learn to be smarter with his gunslinger mentality. The reason he had 15 picks last season is that he tried forcing too many passes. Teams like prospects with the confidence to make any throw, but they also like QBs being smart enough to fight another down and not force the issue.
Last season was Allen’s first season as a starter, so if he can further progress his already incredible football talent, and his knowledge of the game, he will be a top pick in the draft, and a potential NFL franchise QB.
