Frankie Hammond and Lucky Whitehead

Frankie Hammond and Lucky Whitehead are listed as the bottom two wide receivers and the top two kick and punt returners on the Jets unofficial depth chart.

Special teams are Hammond and Whitehead’s best shot at a roster spot but there is likely room for just one of them.

Hammond has just two career kickoff returns but returned them for a total of 74 yards. Most of his work has been punt returning with a career 10.9-yard average on 29 returns.

Lucky Whitehead has had an interesting offseason. Whitehead was released by the Dallas Cowboys after being charged with shoplifting in June. As it turned out, the shoplifter who identified himself as Lucky Whitehead was not Whitehead at all.

The Cowboys stuck by their decision to move on from Whitehead and he joined the New York Jets.

As far as on-the-field play goes, Whitehead can do a little bit of everything. He has 20 carries for 189 yards and nine catches for 64 yards in his career. His real damage, however, is done on special teams. Whitehead averages 25.6 yards per kickoff return and 6.9 yards per punt return.

Between these two, I think the Jets hang onto Lucky Whitehead due to his ability to be used in different ways on offense.
