Ronald Torreyes is one of the unsung heroes of this New York Yankees team. He is small in stature, but make no mistake, he’s a big time player.

Although he’s one of the smallest men in professional baseball, Yankees utility infielder Ronald Torreyes has had his share of big hits and moments in 2017.

The 5 foot, 8 inch Torreyes, often overshadowed by bigger stars such as Aaron Judge, has been just as important to the success of the Yankees so far this season and, as the team enters the

final two months of the regular season, Torreyes can be an invaluable asset for Joe Girardi down the stretch.

Yankees fans didn’t know what to expect when news broke that Didi Gregorius would miss the first month of the season following a shoulder injury in the World Baseball Classic. Losing a player of his talent level could have buried the Yankees early, but Torreyes stepped up and filled in to the best of his abilities.

Torreyes was 21-for-67 in April, coming out to a respectable .313 average. He also had 13 RBI, one home run and scored five runs with a .433 slugging percentage and a .746 OPS.

Since Gregorius returned to the lineup, Torreyes has been used to fill in for injured players around the infield, or simply to give another player the night off here or there. In June, Torreyes collected six RBI on 14 hits for a .291 average.

His .706 OPS and .385 slugging percentage to finish the month were the highest totals in each category since the end of April, and his .321 OBP was his highest mark of the season.

July saw Torreyes’ playing time increase as he filled in at second base for Starlin Castro, who found himself on the disabled list multiple times with a bum hamstring. He tallied 17 hits in July, accumulating a .288 average with seven RBI and five runs.

He drove in all three runs the Yankees had in Sunday’s 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay, and has come with plenty of big hits this season, including a walk-off single against the Texas Rangers in late June. So far this season, Torreyes has a .288 average with three home runs, 27 RBI and a .309 OBP.

In an era were specialization is encouraged and versatility is left by the wayside, it’s nice to see someone like Ronald Torreyes get an opportunity and succeed in the major leagues. He’s been an indispensable piece for the Yankees this season, and there’s no doubt that he’ll be playing in meaningful games as the postseason nears.
