Instant Reaction
– The Washington Nationals make a trade for Howie Kendrick that will likely go under the radar. Pick up much-needed outfielder with the injuries to Adam Eaton, Jayson Werth, and Michael Taylor.
– Very interesting trade from the New York Mets who were thought to be in sell mode. Joel Sherman reports that the Mets still intend to trade reliever Addison Reed. Ramos will be paired with Jerry Blevins and Jeurys Familia in the back-end of New York’s bullpen in 2018.
– The details of the Jeremy Hellickson deal have not been disclosed but this trade doesn’t make much sense to me. The Orioles are extreme longshots for the playoffs and, according to Ken Rosenthal, Baltimore still plans to listen to offers on Zach Britton and Brad Brach. The prospects heading to Philadelphia will greatly influence my view on the deal but right now this is a head scratcher.
– I’m a Hyun Soo Kim fan, but the O’s didn’t give up too much in this deal. If they can’t re-sign Hellickson after the season, however, this trade will seem a bit unnecessary.
– After acquiring Garcia from the Atlanta Braves last week, a rough slide combined with the hot play from the Indians and Royals made the Twins decide to trade the lefty away. Garcia fills a need for the Yankees and gives them insurance if the Sonny Gray price tag is too expensive. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that the Yankees are still interested in adding Gray, however, I don’t see who gets booted from their rotation if they add yet another starter.
– Kansas City Royals get a corner outfield bat to make up for the struggling Alex Gordon. Royals going for it with Hosmer, Moustakas, and Cain set to hit free agency at the end of the year. Love that they’re giving their core one more shot at a playoff run. Should be a fun team to watch if they get into the playoffs.
– Lucroy is having a down year but this is a nice move for the Rockies. Colorado will hope that change of scenery and playoff chase will bring back the Lucroy we saw in Milwaukee. Rockies were getting little out of their backstops and don’t give up much to acquire a former All-Star.
– Cubs address both of their remaining needs: bullpen help and backup catcher. Tigers get closer to what should eventually be a full rebuild. Chicago now has more than enough talent to hold off the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. Their sights are now set on the Nationals and Dodgers. Candelario was Chicago’s last top 100 prospect. Their farm system will now be towards the bottom the league. With such a young core, however, the Cubs won’t need to rely too heavily on their prospects for the foreseeable future. Their roster is filled with former top prospects and the Cubbies will be contenders for years to come. I’m not sure they have passed the Nationals or Dodgers in the NL power rankings with this trade, but they are definitely better suited for another World Series run today than they were yesterday.
– Great move for the Mets. After acquiring A.J. Ramos earlier, New York had no plans for Reed in their future bullpen once Jeurys Familia gets healthy. Three young arms is a nice return. All three were in the Red Sox top 30 prospects. Boston gets Reed to help bridge the gap between their starters and All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel. With Reed and Eduardo Nunez now on board, the Sox filled both of their biggest needs and should battle the Yankees for the AL East crown all the way to the end of the season.
– Minor trade between Oakland and Arizona but necessary for DBacks after losing Chris Owings to a fractured finger on Sunday.
– Just one year after acquiring Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress from the Brewers for top prospects Luis Ortiz and Lewis Brinson, the Rangers have traded both away for not nearly as much as they paid for them. Jeffress returns to Milwaukee who has now added a few bullpen pieces to try and keep pace with the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Could Yu Darvish be the next domino to fall in Texas?
– Astros add to their bullpen. Hoston already has a huge lead in the AL West but making moves to help in the postseason. Bullpen depth becomes more important in October.
– Yankees clear a 40-man roster spot. Could Sonny Gray fill it?
– Wow. What a blockbuster. Yankees get their controllable starting pitcher but boy did it come at a price. Jorge Mateo was having a breakout year in Double-A but did not have clear future in New York. Dustin Fowler is recovering from knee surgery but was highly-regarded in the Yankees organization after having a huge year this year in Triple-A. James Kaprielian was the Yankees first round pick in 2015 and was thought to make it to the majors this year but ended up having Tommy John surgery. If healthy, he should be a top of the rotation starter. Oakland is certainly banking on good health from Fowler and Kaprielian. If not, this will be a steal for the Yanks.
– The Indians add to their bullpen, reuniting with Joe Smith, who pitched in Cleveland from 2009-2013. The AL Central race between the Indians and Royals should be fun to watch.
– Big pickup by the Nationals, who still needed bullpen help after acquiring Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle from the A’s two weeks ago. Kintzler was an All-Star this year and should help sure up the back end of the Nats pen. With the division all but wrapped up, this is a move focused on October. It’s a shame to see the Twins go from underdog buyers to sellers so quickly though.
– Another team reuniting with a reliever as the DBacks get David Hernandez from the Angels. Arizona looks to hold off the Rockies for the top NL Wild Card spot after Colorado made some nice additions over the past few days.
– Don’t quite understand the O’s getting Tim Beckham. After acquiring Jeremy Hellickson, Baltimore continued to buy at the deadline despite being in fourth place in the AL East. They were unable to find a trade partner for Brad Brach or Zach Britton, despite the Indians, Astros, and Dodgers reportedly extremely interested in their closer. Perhaps this is a move aimed towards the future, but the O’s should be considered a deadline loser.
– The Pirates add Joaquin Benoit to their bullpen after losing Tony Watson. Minor move for Pittsburgh as they will likely fall out of the playoff race in the coming weeks.
– The Dodgers were great and they just got greater. LA made three moves in the final hours of the deadline, with the biggest coming in after the 4 pm ET cutoff. Baseball’s best team added a pair of lefties to their bullpen in Tony Watson and Tony Cingrani, and picked up Yu Darvish at the buzzer. Darvish will be the Dodgers’ ace while Clayton Kershaw is on the disabled list and team up with Kershaw to form a scary 1-2 punch come October. LA has the best record in the MLB and is going all-in, trying to win their first World Series championship since 1988.
