RP David Robertson, Chicago White Sox, Buy

The White Sox’s trade of Jose Quintana to the Chicago Cubs earlier this week continued their fire sale that began this past winter with the trades of Chris Sale and Adam Eaton.

Chicago, believe it or not, still had more trade chips.

The White Sox have now parted ways with closer David Robertson.

Yankees fans should be familiar with Robertson’s work. He was in New York’s bullpen for seven years before leaving for Chicago in free agency in 2015.

More from New York Yankees

In 2017, Robertson has a 2.70 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and a 47-11 strikeout to walk ratio in 33.1 innings. These numbers have allowed Robertson to convert 13 of 14 save chances.

Joe Girardi had not been able to get Tyler Clippard, Dellin Betances, and Aroldis Chapman all pitching well at the same time. Yankees fans certainly miss last year’s dominant Miller-Betances-Chapman back-end of the bullpen. David Robertson could help shorten games and give the Yanks a similar version for their playoff push this season.

Robertson is signed through 2018 at $13 million so he will be a part of the back-end of New York’s bullpen next year as well.

Yankees fans should welcome the reunion with their former closer.

Some of Robertson’s best years in pinstripes, however, were as the setup man to Mariano Rivera. He could handle pitching prior to the ninth inning, leaving Chapman in his closer role.

If Chapman struggles, Robertson also gives Girardi another option to close games on top of Betances.

Who better than “Houdini” to upgrade the New York bullpen?
