As the New York Mets’ season continues towards its merciful end, fans want to know where in the world is Amed Rosario? The answer: Las Vegas, playing for the Las Vegas 51s. The real question, however: When will we see the young shortstop in Queens?

The 2017 season has been a frustrating one for New York Mets’ fans. Injuries have decimated what was supposed to be a playoff-caliber roster.

Mets’ fans need something to get excited about in the second half of the season. Sure, they can hope for better health, but there are no guarantees when it comes to injuries. The real excitement and the player that Mets’ fans have been waiting a while for is Amed Rosario.

The top prospect in New York’s farm system, Rosario is just waiting for his chance at the big leagues.

Through 87 games with Triple-A Las Vegas, Rosario is slashing .330/.368/.473 with 17 doubles, seven triples, and seven home runs. The young shortstop has also driven in 53 runs and stolen 17 bases.

At the MLB Futures Games earlier this month, Rosario, the starting shortstop for the World Team, declared himself “100 percent ready” for the major leagues.

Mets’ fans know he’s ready. Rosario himself knows he’s ready. Why doesn’t the Mets’ front office think he’s ready?

More from New York Mets

New York was thought to originally be keeping Rosario in the minors in order to delay his arbitration eligibility. Teams have recently been keeping “Super Two” prospects in the minor leagues to save money down the road.

However, June 1 is typically thought of as the Super Two deadline. After June 1, teams can call up prospects without having to worry about speeding up their arbitration process.

Today is July 19, well past the Super Two deadline. The New York Mets no longer have financial reasons to keep their top prospect in Las Vegas.

So what exactly are the Mets looking for from Rosario?

The shortstop hits for average. He hits for extra-base hits. He can steal bases. Rosario doesn’t walk a ton but also doesn’t strike out much (just 58 Ks in 364 at-bats).

He could improve his defense considering his .954 fielding percentage and 15 errors at short. However, Rosario grades out as a plus defender with a plus arm. He should develop into a more consistent fielder and, based on how the Mets’ season is going, could learn on the job in Queens.

With the trade deadline less than two weeks away, the Mets could soon be moving on from players like Asdrubal Cabrera and Jose Reyes, opening up a spot for Amed Rosario.

We’re all ready and excited for Rosario’s promotion. It is just a matter of time as the 21-year-old will make his debut at some point during the second half of the season.

A trade deadline sell-off could leave Mets’ fans with few players to root for. An Amed Rosario promotion, however, will bring excitement to Citi Field. Once in the major leagues, Rosario will bring that excitement to New York for years to come.
