MLB’s non-waiver trade deadline is July 31st. As the New York Yankees appear to be in playoff contention, every day this month we will take a look at a player who could be involved in the Yankees’ deadline activity. These players will either be current Yankees who could be traded away or players from other organizations who New York could look to acquire for the playoff push.

We’ve made it past the All-Star Game and are working our way into full on trade season. The Yankees could look into an All-Star reliever when the trade deadline rolls around.

For those who watched the 2017 MLB All-Star Game, you saw Pat Neshek pitch the second inning for the National League, unfamiliar territory for a reliever.

Neshek made quick work of the American League, needing just 11 pitches to retire the side, despite giving up a single to Justin Smoak.

The Phillies’ sidewinder retired Carlos Correa, Corey Dickerson, and Salvador Perez.

The Houston Astros, Correa’s team, are all but assured a playoff spot and the Yankees’ biggest threat in the AL.

Dickerson is on the Tampa Bay Rays, a team New York is battling in the AL East and a potential opponent for the Yanks in the Wild Card game.

Perez’s Kansas City Royals are another team that could face the Yankees in the Wild Card after their strong finish to the first half of the season.

Isn’t it nice to know that Pat Neshek can get those guys out? Wouldn’t it be nice if he were in the Yankees’ bullpen?

Now, I realize that just because he got those three out in the All-Star Game doesn’t mean Neshek will get them out down the stretch or in the playoffs when the pressure and stakes are much higher.

Pat Neshek has been getting just about everybody out this season though!

More from New York Yankees

In 35.1 innings, Neshek has a 1.27 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and a 36-5 strikeout to walk ratio.

The sidearmed righty has the numbers of a lefty specialist with a .188 left-handed batting average against. Right-handed hitters don’t have too much more success with a .234 batting average against.

A 36-year-old free-agent-to-be, you wouldn’t think Neshek would cost much at the trade deadline. The problem, though, is that the Yankees might end up in a bidding war with the rival Red Sox.

Boston has reportedly shown strong interest in Neshek to help get the ball to their All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel. This should only increase the Yankees’ interest though.

If New York works out a trade for Neshek, not only do they get one of baseball’s best setup men, they also steal their division rival’s top trade target.

At the very least, having trade talks with the Phillies could drive up the asking price for Neshek. This could force the Red Sox to sacrifice more prospects to upgrade their bullpen.

As has been the theme for most of my daily trade deadline profiles, I wouldn’t go crazy giving away prospects for Neshek. However, if Brian Cashman can work out a deal using players like Rob Refsnyder, Bryan Mitchell, Billy McKinney, or Jake Cave, he should pull the trigger.

The Phillies will likely get multiple teams vying for Neshek’s services. They are also almost guaranteed to trade their All-Star setup man, considering they have the worst record in baseball.

If Pat Neshek is coming to an American League contender, the Yankees should make their best effort to bring him to New York.

With tomorrow being the last day of the All-Star break, we’ll profile another 2017 All-Star who the Yanks could look to acquire at the trade deadline.
