C Garrett Stubbs, Houston Astros

Remember when Travis d’Arnaud was the centerpiece of the R.A. Dickey trade?

Oh how times have changed.

d’Arnaud has started over 100 games in a season just once in his Mets career. Even when he’s healthy, his career average is .242. With runners successfully stealing 86.7% of the time against d’Arnaud, his lack of defense has turned him into the backup to Rene Rivera.

With Rivera getting up there in age, a prospect New York should target is Houston Astros catcher Garrett Stubbs.

At 24 years old, Stubbs could be an impact player in 2018 and would help improve the Mets defense behind the plate.

Stubbs isn’t an offensive catcher, hitting just .255 in the minors this season. However, he does get on base, with more walks than strikeouts in his minor league career.

He’s a great defensive catcher, throwing out 51% of potential base stealers and scouts say Stubbs also calls a good game behind the plate.

Stubbs would be a huge defensive upgrade behind the plate that could help a pitching staff that has struggled to contain the running game in recent years.
